The Major Employers List is published annually by the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. We devote considerable time to contacting every eligible employer in Pierce County.

About our methodology
A full-time equivalent (FTE) is not the same as employee headcount. FTE counts include both full-time employees and part-time employees. Full-time employees account for 1 FTE. Part-time employees are accounted for based on average hours worked in a 40 hour week.
Any given year’s total may understate the number of entities with 100 or more FTEs because employers such as public school systems are lumped into FTE totals by category. For example, 15 public school systems employing more than 13,000 individuals are recorded as one employer. Other examples are Washington State Institutions of Higher Education with employees at eight campus locations in Pierce County; and Washington State government, which employs thousands of people across Pierce County. Also note that employment with private contractors is attributed to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
In cases where an employer does not reply to inquiries, the previous year’s numbers may be used unless other reliable sources can be confirmed (e.g. official company communications in the form of press releases, annual reports, and website headcounts).
