Pierce County plays a highly significant role in the state and regional economy with over 11 percent of the state's population, labor force, and total employment. With the growth of both the manufacturing and service sectors over the past decade, it is well-poised to assume a greater role in the national and global economy in the next 25 years. Pierce County also has great access higher education institutions in the region including neighboring King and Thurston Counties. Among the three counties there are eight major four-year universities and colleges, and 15 community and technical colleges.
